Water in Food

Deficiency of water in the body

Water is an important constituent of food. It is essential for life. Human body contains about 70% of water by weight. Water is needed in our body to perform many vital functions. Some of them are :

  • 1. It transport substances and nutrients inside our body.
  • 2. It regulates the temperature of our body by sweating . 
  • 3. It helps our body absorb nutrients from the food.
  • 4. Water acts as an important medium where most chemical reactions, occuring in the body takes place.
  • Dehydration :

    Water is very essential for proper functioning of our body. Excess loss of water from the body leads to a condition called dehydration

    Dehydration causes loss of salts and leads to weakness in the body. Oral rehydrating solution can be given to the patient to recover from dehydration. It is available free of cost at primary health centers. It can also be made at home by mixing 8 teaspoons of sugar and 1 teaspoon of salt in 1 litre of clean , drinking water. This mixture is available at chemist shops also.
